Dr. S.R. Ranganathan has developed five laws or principles of Library Science. They are: Ranganathan's Five Laws of Library Science
1. Books are for use
2. Every reader his/her book
3. Every book its reader
4. Save the time of the reader
5. The library is a growing organism
I am sharing this information with you so you can look at The Library Media Center as the hub of information it is meant to be. Let me explain based on Ranganathan's laws:

4. Save the time of the reader
5. The library is a growing organism
I am sharing this information with you so you can look at The Library Media Center as the hub of information it is meant to be. Let me explain based on Ranganathan's laws:
1) Books are for use: The books (either in digital or print form) are meant to be used by patrons. Reading non fiction and fiction books enrich people in ways that are too numerous to mention here. I have provided a link to a very good article published in School Library Media Research back in 2000. http://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/aaslpubsandjournals/slr/vol3/SLMR_IndependentReading_V3.pdf
2) Every reader his/her book: my aim is to have a collection as diverse as all of our patrons. Building a quality collection takes time. One advantage we have is that our students have access to multiple collections through their town libraries as well. I want to know what you and your students are interested in so that I can build a collection that includes the subjects and things they are interested in.
3) Every book its reader- There are times when the reader is not aware that they are interested in a certain book and it is my role, together with your help, to let the students know that a particular book is for them. (In this case I am also referring to special books that help students learn more about themselves).
4) Save the time of the reader – I am the last person who wants to have someone read something they do not want to read. The Library Media Center is equipped with multiple catalogs to save the reader time and find the title that they would be interested to read. For more information about this, please ask.
5) The library is a growing organism- by definition, a library is where information is stored. Technology has created more efficient ways for us to store information but has not prevented from us to acquire it. The Tri County LMC continues to evolve to meet the growing needs of our patrons.
In conclusion, whenever a new title is brought into the collection at Tri County, I try to make sure that this title will serve various needs of our students.
I welcome your feedback and observation to help reinforce the laws/philosophy developed by Dr. Ranganathan- Mathematician and Librarian 1892-1972 |
