Over the past two years we have been able to pilot and introduce Newsela to our students. In our first year students of Nancy Sibilia, and Sara Martin were introduced to the tools of this rich resource. Sara's lesson focused on Civil Rights. We built a lesson that provided the students an opportunity to explore several different articles chosen for them. You can find the lesson here. You may access the 15 articles text set here. Nancy's Environmental Science students accessed an article related to the question: "Should the U.S. use Nuclear power?" You can find the article here.
Newsela gives access to News articles at multiple reading levels. This allows each learner to access the concepts at their own reading level. Teachers are able to assign the students to read, annotate and highlight, summarize based on teacher’s prompt, take a quiz to show understanding. This year Caralyn Good, Grace Maneri, Sara Martin, Michael Young, Nancy Sibilia and John Kowalczyk are using Newsela Professional version with their students.
To date more than 3,000 articles have been read by our students. Due to their positive feedback, Newsela Pro will be made available to all staff next year. Theses teachers can help you with classroom implementation. News articles can be applied to many disciplines including Math. I look forward to introducing Newsela Pro next year to the entire staff and have you take advantage of this wonderful resource. |
