I am certain that you have had the opportunity to see the books moving around at one point or another. This is due to the fact, as pointed out in a previous bulletin, about the laws of Library by Raganathan (5th law), that the library is a living organism and it continuously changes. Since arriving at Tri -County 3 years ago, I have rearranged the physical layout of the print collection and added and deleted numerous titles. I continuously look at ways to help our patrons understand that there are various locations where titles relating to their informational needs might be located.
If you are not aware, the physical book title collection located within the Library Media Center space is divided between the fiction section (near the computer workstations and the bookshelves under windows) and the nonfiction bookshelves “in the round” located opposite the LMC office.
As new titles are being introduced to the collection they are temporarily displayed in special sections to highlight them. Newest print fiction titles can be found next to the circulation desk. Newest print nonfiction titles can be found among the 10 carousels within the nonfiction section. |
How familiar are you with the Dewey classification system? The basic breakdown of the 100’s may not be sufficient for you to realize all the titles that are available to you and your students to utilize.
This guide will help you understand why a book related to your subject matter may be located in various parts of the ever changing collection and why I have the books arranged within Dewey Decimal classification. I encourage you to click the third level breakdown provided in the ItsLearning guide. |
For example: A member of the Math department might be certain that the majority of what they might be looking for would be in the 520’s (Pure Science) but may need to look for titles in the 330’s (Social Science) and other parts of the collections when looking for applied math with Healthcare, Engineering, Accounting and more. Many shop staff may find as well that titles covering topics they teach on various shelves within different parts of the collection.
